How does Builty’s permit series relate to the Census Building Permits Survey?
The federal series is the benchmark for residential construction and is built from a survey of permit-issuing places. Builty collects the underlying records directly and continuously, which makes it a complement: same phenomenon, different method, available at address level and between publication cycles.
Can permit records measure post-disaster recovery?
Yes, and they are close to the only record that can. Imagery shows a structure is gone and then back; the permit says what was rebuilt, under which code cycle, and whether mitigation was included. Aggregated to a declared footprint, that is a recovery curve.
What do permit records show about electrification and grid load?
Panel upgrades, heat pumps, solar, storage and EV chargers are all permitted work, and they appear when the work is authorized rather than when an interconnection or a utility program records them. At feeder or territory level that is a forward view of load.
Is the data only useful where Builty has deep history?
Depth varies by jurisdiction, and every address returns its coverage status, so an agency can see exactly which parts of its geography are backed by records before relying on a number.
